OUR THOUGHTS:

I need a new pair of glasses ... I cannot see what happened ... the picture is too big for my small vision ... I don't have a reference point  to plug into ...  I called all my loved ones and said "Did you see it?"  ... "I love you."

Breaking News Alert

Bush Addresses Nation
President says U.S. will "hunt down" those responsible for apparent terrorist attacks.

9:03 a.m.  United Airlines Flight 175 slams into the South tower (2 WTC) of the World Trade Center.
  OUR THOUGHTS:

September 11 has reinforced my feeling that life is so very precious and my feeling that this is a very wonderful country with many good, generous, caring people, like firemen, policemen, and librarians. There are so many people who meet tragedy square on and keep on going.

God bless America

Carmen Taylor/ KHBS-KHOG TV
  OUR THOUGHTS:

September 11 played like a movie, an excruciatingly painful and agonizingly long movie. I woke up the next day and realized what I saw earlier was real. The Twin Towers did collapse, and the images of death I saw the day before were real. Life will go on, but different, for a long time to come.

Sept. 11, 2001 Noon
Internet News:  The Twin Towers were struck by airliners shortly before and shortly after 9 a.m. News reports said both were American Airlines flights. A World Trade Center official said about 10,000 people worked in each of the towers, and about 5,000 tourists visit each day. About an hour after they were struck, each tower collapsed.

OUR THOUGHTS:

I am angry and feel violated over the terrible incident. I feel the rage of revenge inside me and through the whole country. It is sad that such inhumane acts have forced upon us to want to react in such a violent way. I am not against revenge and stomping out terrorism. The real tragedy is that as we retaliate, which I am for, I can not help but feel that we all lose a little humanity within ourselves.

Sept. 11, 2001 9:07am   WashingtonPost.com coverage of Apparent terrorist attacks at Defense Department follows planes crashing at the World Trade Center in New York. Government buildings around Washington being evacuated and all air traffic has been grounded.

Video Webcam: Video of a second plane crashing into the World Trade Center in New York.

  OUR THOUGHTS:

My heart and prayers go out to the victims, their families, their friends and colleagues. Everyone is grieving about this monstrous attack on the Americans and wondering what can we do to help ease the pain and suffering for each other? There is no good answer except to comfort each other. I am overwhelmed of the generous offers and condolences of people from other nations.

OUR THOUGHTS:

I don't know how to explain it but I feel a kindness in the air, a feeling of being in this together.

Sept. 11, 2001 11:00am
Internet News:  There are reports of a large fire in the mall and the west wing of the White House is being evacuated. The Federal Aviation Administration has shut down all airports in the country.

Sept. 11, 2001 1:00pm
Internet News:  American Airlines said its Flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles, which had 92 people aboard, was the first to crash into one of the World Trade Center's 110-story twin towers. It said its Flight 77, carrying 64 people from Washington to Los Angeles, crashed into the other tower.

Stan Honda - AFP
OUR THOUGHTS:

Have the terrorists won already? Our entire life is and will continue to be disrupted. Our freedom of movement will be curtailed. We believed we were prepared to detect bombs and firearms so as to prevent the hijacking of planes, but neither bombs nor firearms were used in these "acts of war." What is next? Germ warfare? That is said to be even simpler than hijacking four airplanes and using them as instruments of destruction.

Tuesday, September 11, 2001 -- 10:18 AM EST  One tower of the World Trade Center has collapsed. Witnesses report people jumping from the building to escape the fire.  Chicago's Sears Tower has been evacuated. Major government institutions, including the Treasury and the State Department, have also been evacuated

OUR THOUGHTS:

Life Changes since 9-11: Extra security at our front desk- no non-court appointed individuals allowed to use the library / enter the bldg.  All employees must wear ID. Less people taking public transportation/the train/the trains are now w/ less cars @ rush hr. More train delays re; suspicious packages. Noticed that the female Islamic med student isn't on the am train anymore. The urban legend "Klingerman Foundation letter" doesn't seem that funny anymore. Intentionally smiling/making an extra effort to be friendly to the traditional Islamic neighbors I encounter in the local grocery now shopping very early in the day.  Wondering/worrying about the possibility of the draft being started.  Watching massive cuts being made in the FLorida Budget & wondering about the huge amounts of $$ & life it takes to fuel a war.

Tuesday, September 11, 2001 9:45 AM EST  Aircraft Crashes Near the Pentagon  An airplane has reportedly crashed near the Pentagon just outside Washington D.C., fire can be seen coming from the building.

Grieving man

OUR THOUGHTS:

I found myself wondering if I knew anyone killed at the Pentagon. Then I realized that I knew them all. I knew that thick-skulled Major with the crew-cut that you could never explain anything to. I knew that grim-faced Captain who was always so serious and out to impress her boss. I knew the civilian secretaries who kept the Colonels straight - and the ones who couldn't get a message right if you wrote it for them. I knew the Generals who were pouring over the "early-bird." I knew the NCO's talking about Monday night's game. I knew the DA civilians, getting coffee and listening to the radio about what was going on in New York.

Whatever their names and ranks, we knew them all - and grieve for them.

OUR THOUGHTS:

I believe that the September 11th tragedy has reminded us that it is important to honor the lives and loves that we have instead of the things and status symbols that we don't have. A focus on what is essential for an honest, good soul and kind heart is more important to me than ever before. Above all else, my faith and spirituality have been strengthened and reaffirmed.  What have I lost? The innocence of being in a privileged society where we rarely know such widespread panic and sorrow.

OUR THOUGHTS:

During this time of uncertainty around the world, it is important that we have a heightened sense of awareness as we go about our daily activities. Working together and being pro-active about our safety will provide the best foundation for action, if necessary. I think keeping everyone informed is the first-step in being pro-active.

Sept. 11, 2001 11:00am
Internet News: Not long after the New York attack, a plane crashed just outside or into the side of the Pentagon. One report described the plane as a commuter-size aircraft.

OUR THOUGHTS:

I was looking at the sky tonight and I am aware of the eerie stillness of it all. The only things that are flying above are the geese. My life has been forever changed by this fatalistic act of cowardice. My country, the alleged strongest country in world, has become a "no fly zone."

Today's Refdesk Link of the Day is:
FBI: Most Wanted Terrorists at:
http://www.fbi.gov/mostwant/terrorists/fugitives.htm

United States Government officials have announced the creation of the "Most Wanted Terrorists" List. The first individuals placed on this list are 22 people wanted for their role in crimes committed since 1985, crimes which resulted in the death of innocent people around the world.

WASHINGTON _ White House threatened with terrorist attack, source says. West Wing of White House evacuated amid terrorist threats. Southwest Airlines and United Airlines have canceled all flights until further notice.

OUR THOUGHTS:

When I was growing up overseas I was always on alert and had to be aware of my surroundings because of the terrorist nature of the countries we were living in. I never imagined that my own homeland would become a terrorist state just as those who flew that day or entered the World Trade Center never imagined that they would be participating as innocent pawns in a senseless war.

Breaking News Alert 9-11-10:50am EST OUR THOUGHTS:

Several years ago I lost a close friend on the Swiss Air flight.  For several years I have been haunted by the thought that he probably knew he was about to die, since he was both an emergency room doctor and a fixed wing pilot.  The use of cellular phones by the passengers of the hijacked planes confirms the horrible fact that some or all of the passengers knew they were likely to die.  Many were able to contact loved ones and convey their last thoughts.  I am struck by the braveness of these people in their last moments.  I am also haunted, once again, by these thoughts.

Breaking News Alert 9-11-10:50am EST  President Bush cut short a visit to Florida. After brief remarks condemning the attacks, he left. His flight, however, did not return to Washington, and the president prepared remarks for the nation from Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana.

Breaking News Alert 9-11-10:50am EST  Shortly after the Pentagon attack, a car bomb reportedly went off outside the State Department in Washington.

Sept. 11, 2001 2:00pm
Internet News:   Apparently coordinated attacks in New York and Washington followed the hijacking of as many as four airliners around the United States this morning. The attacks destroyed the Twin Towers in lower Manhattan and heavily damaged the Pentagon.

OUR THOUGHTS:

I am shocked!!! The pressure of this horrible tragedy weighs a ton on my compassionate heart. I hurt for those who died for America.

They are the real heroes. We are left behind to try and start all over again. We are left behind to try and cope with this cowardice attack on

a nation that housed them and gave them freedom. They raped us of our freedom!

Internet News: Tuesday afternoon, the FAA announced that all U.S. flights would be grounded until at least noon Wednesday.
Sept. 11, 2001 Noon
Internet News: New York Gov. George Pataki called out the National Guard. All New York subways were closed, as were bridges into and out of Manhattan.
In the wake of the attacks, the United States closed its borders with Canada and Mexico.

We cannot know the true impact of this act of terrorism, nor the effect it will have on our country and the world. But it is likely that there are members of the UMKC community who have been touched by this tragedy and we should reach out to find, and support, those individuals who need our help or simply our concern.

In the 1960s, Minoru Yamasaki, architect of the World Trade Center, and himself a minority architect, also expressed the significance of humanism:

"The World Trade Center should, because of its importance, become a living representation of man's belief in humanity, his need for individual dignity, his belief in the cooperation of men, and through this cooperation his ability to find greatness."

OUR THOUGHTS:

It is not easy to write this, even though in my mind I have written hundreds of notes, in conversations passed thousands of words of wisdom and in my personal thoughts questioned what happened again and again.  If there is any one thing that comes to me again and again it is that even in the year 2001 we still have so little understanding of human beings.  We can receive our education we can discuss the problems we create, we can find economic reasons for failure, we can solve environmental problems, we can blame religion for wars, but we cannot seem to find why in the depth of some of us there is this need to inflict pain and suffering on our fellow man and to use and feel righteous in our methods of this infliction.  There is so much in this world for all of us, the short years we get to spend here so valuable and even if there is forgiveness in heaven how can we ever understand this needless cruelty of humanity.

To all who suffered and to those who grieve may we one day understand.

5:25 p.m. A third building in the World Trade Center complex collapses.

OUR THOUGHTS:

In our workplace we must wear security badge IDs visible at all times. All of our overseas travel has been suspended. There has been heightened security in the courthouses. I have seen more police out on the major interstates.

  OUR THOUGHTS:

If you take a careful look at the emblem on the President's podium, on the walls of our embassies, and etc., you'll notice that the eagle has olive branches in one claw and something a bit more sinister in the other. You might want to start preparing yourselves mentally for the latter ...
